Resourcing giant BHP recognises it can build and accelerate innovation and technology transformation through leveraging suppliers’ expertise. One way it is doing this is through an open innovation approach, with internal departments working collaboratively with external stakeholders. This is based around asking for a solution to a business challenge rather than specifying a product or service, with suppliers giving a 10-minute conceptual pitch in a face-to-face workshop. Continual feedback is given to enable a successful pilot. The supplier keeps the intellectual property while BHP benefits from an innovative culture, empowered teams and reputational enhancement. The initial two challenges have created a potential value of more than $40m and the time between the identification process and the pilot is less than three months (formerly 12 months) and delivery less than a year. Supplier diversity has increased: from small and young companies to big firms challenging their processes and companies outside mining.
