Air New Zealand’s purpose is to ‘Supercharge New Zealand’s success socially, economically and environmentally’, so its procurement team must provide broad and deep value, championing sustainable ‘cost per available seat kilometre’ reduction through optimisation of the supply market, a high level of capability, processes and incoming digital platforms. The 2019- 2021 procurement strategy has six key pillars: partnering; flexibility; value; sustainability; risk; and people. The comprehensive approach wowed judges with evidence of success in all areas, from a doubling of savings to $30m halfway through the financial year thanks to incorporation of revenue, cost avoidance, and capital savings in procurement’s tracked value, to stretching satisfaction targets, a focus on supplier diversity, an agile market engagement process to reduce cycle time by 30%, replacement of 55 million plastic inflight items with sustainable alternatives, use of procurement-negotiated savings as an innovation investment incubating fund, and a culture of teaming.
